\body
Dear Mr. Brodie:
Admission to the PhD program is based on grades, the graduate
record exam, evaluation of the candidate's statement of purpose and
and recommendations, the latter often being decisive if they come
from people we know. There are about 400 applications for about
35 offers of admission. On the basis of your letter I can't estimate
your chances.
Let me recommend {\it Artificial Intelligence} by Charniak
and McDermott and {\it Readings in Artificial Intelligence} by Nilsson
and Webber. Each gives references to other work. Recent IJCAI and
AAAI conference proceedings are also worth looking at.
An AI related job might help --- especially if it led to
strong references from known people. I doubt that management
experience per se is given much weight. The book will surely help.
\closing
Sincerely,
John McCarthy
